Full Time Pre-Professional Program

Course Outline

CAPA’s Full Time Pre-Professional program prepares students for entry into the professional dance world.

Led by Director Debbie Turner, the program integrates the best and latest training methods from around the globe. Furthermore, students are offered an international dance and cultural tour each year visiting top companies and schools to enrich and broaden their artistic education and introduce them to the international dance world.

CAPA’s three year, Full Time Pre-Professional program runs six days per week (Monday – Saturday) and is offered under two streams allowing students to graduate within their chosen field of performance. These are:

  • Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance Programme & Theatre related studies with added focused classical dance

  • Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance Programme & Theatre related studies

Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance Programme with added focused classical dance

This stream has a 70% focus on classical ballet and incorporates elements of contemporary classical styles and contemporary dance. Students train daily in the Russian (Vaganova) Classical Ballet method, the most internationally recognised classical ballet technique used by training schools and companies, and other subjects include Pointe studies, Pas de Deux, Repertoire, Contemporary Dance, Body Conditioning/Yoga or Gyrotonics, Choreographic Studies and Drama & Performance Studies to form the core subjects of this training program.

An additional fourth year of training is offered to exceptional students within this program upon invitation by the Director. This is made available to students with a focus on pure dance performance to receive an additional year of training in technique, artistry and performance for entry into the professional dance world.

Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance Programme & Theatre related studies

This stream focuses on classical dance and performance studies as above and may include, , Dance for Musical Theatre (Jazz), Hip Hop, and Vocal Workshops & Masterclasses.

  • In both program streams and alongside their core training, students work with professional choreographers to develop new work for performance. Students can have many performance opportunities during each year of training. This is to ensure each student is building their artistry and performance qualities alongside their technical training. Annual performance opportunities may include CAPA’s annual Summer season at Artscape Theatre and a season at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.
